The formation and maintenance of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) play a critical role in tumor growth and metastasis. 1, 2 In the early stages of solid tumor growth, tumor cells derive oxygen and nutrients by diffusion from surrounding normal tissues. Continued growth beyond a certain size requires angiogenesis. New blood vessels recruited by the tumor supply additional oxygen and nutrients, allowing tumor cells to continue growing, migrate into the lymphatic system and bloodstream, and potentially metastasize (colonize distant organs)3.
