LUX-Lung Clinical Trial Programme

Kenneth O'Byrne

The LUX-Lung programme being developed by Boehringer Ingelheim is a comprehensive clinical trials programme to evaluate the role of the novel epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, BIBW 2992*, in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer.

Well, there are two broad sweeps to the programme. The first is to treat patients who have got epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase mutations in both the first and subsequent line settings. And the second arm of the programme is to treat patients who previously have had exposure to the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors, not necessarily mutation positive but patients who have had either some response or resistance to those previous treatments.

It is my personal view that the LUX-Lung programme truly is a comprehensive programme; at the end of which the investigator will have a clear understanding of its value in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. The trials that have been designed are not only the ones that one would expect to answer important, pivotal questions, but there is also an element of bravery and blue skies thinking in the programme.
