The LUX-Lung II trial will give us a benchmark indication as to how well BIBW 2992* is acting in patients who have got established epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase mutations. And this is important because we now have 2 published studies in the New England Journal of Medicine who have evaluated that population.
The first of those was a Spanish study, which looked at erlotinib in Caucasian patients, who had established epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase mutations in exons 19 and 21. The second study was the IPASS study, which compared gefitinib to chemotherapy in an enriched population.
Preliminary results from the LUX-Lung II study have already been presented at ASCO 2009 and they are encouraging, suggesting that the agent has at least equivalent activity to the established tyrosine kinase inhibitors, erlotinib and gefitinib.
