Boehringer Ingelheim's next generation, triple angiokinase inhibitor currently under development, whichacts on three growth factor receptors simultaneously: vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) and fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR). All three growth factors are crucially involved in the formation of blood vessels (angiogenesis) and inhibition of them may play a critical role in the prevention of tumour growth and spread. BIBF 1120 (planned trade name Vargatef*) is an investigational compound. Its safety and efficacy have not yet been fully established.
