One of a family of receptors that are acted upon by growth factors, mainly epidermal growth factor, stimulating cell growth and division. It is found in large amounts in some types of breast cancer (HER+ or HER positive) where its inhibition by monoclonal antibodies forms part of the treatment for breast cancer.
