The mechanism whereby a signal is sent from the cell surface to the nucleus. Many of the messages sent throughout the body, for example by growth factors or neurotransmitters, are relayed via receptors on the cell surface. Once activated, receptors pass messages to the cell nucleus through signal transduction pathways.
